OKLAHOMA CITY –
Shorter days and colder weather can make winter especially challenging for older adults, often reducing mobility and increasing the risk of isolation. Retirement specialist Jim McWhirter joined News 9 to explain how daily routines, social connections and simple habits can help seniors stay healthy and engaged. McWhirter, joined by his dog Buddy, also shared practical advice on exercise, communication and volunteering.
What are some daily habits or routines that seniors can use for their health and happiness?
McWhirter: “The first thing I believe is that we have to choose to be happy, no matter what our circumstances are. There are so many things that we can do to remain happy, and one of them that I’m a big believer in, especially for our adult age generation, is exercise, and have a plan of daily exercise, have a plan of daily activities. You know, we talked for years on our About Your Retirement program, almost 16 years every Sunday morning, and reminded people, don’t retire without a plan of action. And so, it’s important for everybody to do that, but you know, I’m a big believer in swimming. I’m 45 days away from swimming 10 years without missing a day, so I gotta make it 45 more days to win that decade award. whatever it is.”
What steps can seniors take to avoid isolation?
McWhirter: “Well, I believe in being a volunteer. I believe that we should serve God by serving others. And there are so many things you can do this time of year. And even if you can’t travel or you don’t drive anymore, you can join senior groups and serve food. I mean, we’ve got Thanksgiving coming up this week and Christmas connections and things to help with children and getting Christmas gifts and communication, no matter what. If you are stuck at home most of the time, learn to communicate. Learn to text and email, and keep in communication. That’s the easiest way if you want to text your grandchildren. your great-grandchildren. I haven’t told you this, but we’re going to have our first great-grandchild, and her name’s Camila. And so a great-granddaughter, the first one that we’ll have in a few months. I’ve already bought her a dive suit, so I’m hoping to have four generations of us in the ocean together scuba diving someday. But those are all things that become really important to volunteer and do things and spend time with others.”
