INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — As the holiday season approaches, nutrition expert Pamela Nisevich Bede offers strategies to maintain health and balance, addressing common issues like glucose swings and low energy.

Pamela Nisevich Bede, a registered dietitian and author, joined a program on November 14 to share insights on managing health during the holidays. She highlighted the impact of glucose levels on energy and mood, and introduced Abbott’s Lingo, an over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor, as a tool to help track and manage these fluctuations.

“The holidays are one of our favorite times of year,” said Pamela Nisevich Bede. “But I think we can all admit that maybe our healthy habits start to shift a little bit during this time.”

Bede emphasized the importance of understanding glucose behavior, as it can significantly affect mood, energy, and hunger. She explained that glucose is a primary fuel source for the body, and its fluctuations can present challenges to long-term health.

Abbott’s Lingo, a continuous glucose monitor, provides real-time data on glucose levels, allowing users to make informed decisions about their diet and activity. Bede demonstrated how the device, worn on the arm, offers minute-by-minute insights for 14 days.

To help stabilize glucose levels, Bede suggested simple dietary adjustments, such as starting meals with vegetables, followed by protein and fat, before consuming carbohydrates and sweets. This approach can slow digestion and prevent glucose spikes.

In addition to dietary changes, Bede recommended incorporating more movement, particularly after meals, to utilize glucose as fuel and maintain energy levels. This can help prevent the post-meal energy slump often experienced during the holidays.

By making small, manageable changes to diet and activity, individuals can better navigate the holiday season’s demands while maintaining their health and well-being. Abbott’s Lingo offers a practical tool for those seeking to monitor and manage their glucose levels effectively.
