Remarkably, the microbiome has been implicated in a wide array of diseases, ranging from gastrointestinal disorders to neurological conditions, and its potential in therapeutics and disease prevention has become a focal point for research and innovation in medical technology. This burgeoning field of microbial therapeutics aims to harness the human microbiome to develop innovative strategies for disease treatment and prevention.The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together a collection of papers and ideas that aligns with the growing interest in precision medicine and the emerging field of microbiome-based therapies. Central to this endeavor is the exploration of variousmodalities, including probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and microbial consortia, as potential interventions to modulate the microbiome and ameliorate disease states. Moreover, the concept of microbial drug delivery, using genetically engineered microorganisms as vectorsfor targeted therapy, has opened new and promising avenues for precision medicine. By taking advantage of the microbial ecosystem within the human body, researchers seek to design intelligent microbial systems capable of delivering therapeutic agents to specific sites or influencing physiological processes in a precise and controlled manner.This research could explore the potential of leveraging the human microbiome, which consists of trillions of microorganisms inhabiting the human body, to develop novel therapeutic approaches for a wide range of medical conditions. We welcome the submissionof manuscripts including, but not limited to, the following topics: Special focus will be given (but is not restricted) to:1. Microbiome-Based Therapies: Investigating the development of microbial-based treatments, including probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics, for conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, metabolic disorders, and even neurological conditions.2. Microbial Engineering for Drug Delivery: Exploring the application of genetically modified microorganisms as targeted drug delivery systems within the human body, potentially offering more precise and effective treatment options.3. Microbiome Profiling for Disease Diagnosis: Examining the use of advanced microbial profiling and metagenomic analysis techniques to identify microbial signatures associated with various diseases, with the aim of developing diagnostic tools and personalized treatment strategies.
