For millions of people with COPD, asthma, or lung damage after tuberculosis, the impact of a preventive injection may be a considerable reduction of exacerbations and complications
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is imbalanced over 37 million people, asthma has impacted more than 22 million people, and about 25% of TB survivors have permanent lung scarring like fibrosis or bronchiectasis
Respiratory disorders have become one of the major health issues in India without much notice. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is imbalanced over 37 million people, asthma has impacted more than 22 million people, and about 25% of TB survivors have permanent lung scarring like fibrosis or bronchiectasis. For the people affected by such diseases, the arrival of influenza is definitely not a mild seasonal problem it is a risky trigger. The flu virus hitting these lungs that are already weak can make obstruction worse, could lead to severe pneumonia, and can cause a situation in which patients have to be taken to the emergency room or intensive-care units.
However, only less than 5% of patients with COPD in India have received an influenza vaccination. This is in spite of the fact that there is a lot of evidence showing that flu shots can decrease the hospitalisation risk by almost 38% and also reduce the exacerbation of the disease. The difference between risk and protection is still very wide and risky.
Dr Murali Mohan, Pulmonologist, Narayana Health, Bangalore, says, “Influenza is by no means a seasonal infection that is taken lightly for patients with COPD, asthma, or post-TB lung damage. It can trigger a hazardous downward spiral. In fact, just one time of influenza can result in extreme shortness of breath, additional infections, and permanent lung function impairment. Immunization offers a powerful protection barrier as it stops such exacerbations, lessens the number of patients admitted to hospitals, and helps maintain the patients’ quality of life. This is the cheapest, scientifically proven measure we can implement to shield our patients from respiratory deterioration that can be avoided.”
Why Chronic Lung Patients Are Especially Vulnerable
Chronic lung diseases are the main reasons that make the lungs a perfect area for infection.
• In the case of COPD patients, the airways are inflamed, filled with mucus, and thus, hinder the airflow. Besides viruses, the airways cannot be cleared of bacteria either.
• Asthma patients have very sensitive airways that over-react even to a slight viral exposure.
• After tuberculosis, the lungs are damaged due to fibrosis and scarring, which permanently reduces lung capacity and makes the person more susceptible to infection.
For such people, getting the flu is hardly ever a mild case, it causes the inflammation to become more severe, the acute exacerbations to be triggered, and secondary bacterial infections to be developed. In fact, after every severe episode, the lung reserve becomes thinner, thus, independence and quality of life are getting lower.
When the Flu Triggers a Crisis
Influenza ranks as one of the major reasons of worsened COPD and asthma situations acutely. Such virus-related exacerbations are generally of a higher intensity and duration as compared to those caused by allergens or pollution. Nevertheless, a few infective episodes occur in vaccinated patients resulting in less wheezing, fewer hospital/emergency visits, and shortened recovery periods. Flu shot is even more beneficial for the patients with the lungs damaged due to past TB infection as it aids in the prevention of bacterial superinfections, which may lead to death in such weakened lungs, thus, making it a safer choice.
A Simple Shot That Saves Lives
Research findings indicate that influenza vaccination is able to:
• Decrease flu-related hospitalizations by as much as 52%.
• Reduce the number of asthma attacks and trips to the emergency room.
• Avert the occurrence of intense pneumonia and respiratory failure in former tuberculosis patients.
Firstly, fewer deaths follow as a result of these advantages. Secondly, healthcare costs go down. Thirdly, people’s quality of life gets better. The proof is very strong the vaccine is effective.
Strengthening India’s Pandemic Readiness
Flu viruses very often change their genetic makeup through minor antigenic drifts or sometimes major antigenic shifts, thus new, deadly strains can sometimes be created. The spread of the disease is limited by a large number of vaccinated people and this also makes it less likely that the virus will mutate – at the same time, this strengthens the immunity of the community. For patients in a risk group, a flu shot is not only a means of personal safety; it is a vital tool in the fight against the outbreak of the next respiratory epidemic.
Making Vaccination a Routine Part of Respiratory Care
Vaccinations, in spite of their benefits that have been clearly demonstrated, are still being done at very low rates. Dr. Mohan, among other experts, suggests:
• Annual flu vaccines for all patients with COPD, asthma, or post-TB lung damage.
• Pneumococcal and COVID-19 vaccines administered together for complete respiratory protection.
• Physician-led counselling sessions to clear misconceptions and enhance patient trust.
• Respiratory clinics providing on-site vaccination for easy access.
The Need to Change
One of the easiest, however, the least utilized measures in respiratory care is the influenza vaccination. For millions of people with COPD, asthma, or lung damage after tuberculosis, the impact of a preventive injection may be a considerable reduction of exacerbations, admission to hospital, and complications. It is necessary to make annual vaccination a part of routine lung care to decrease the disease burden and protect respiratory health in India.
