From simple pre-flight choices to in-flight habits that make a real difference, these practical insights are designed to help travellers stay at ease and arrive at their destination feeling rested and refreshed even during peak travel periods
As the travel season gathers momentum and airports experience a surge in passenger traffic, long-haul flights are becoming an inevitable part of many holiday and business plans. Extended hours in the air, changing time zones, and crowded cabins can take a toll if travellers are not adequately prepared.
Drawing from years of onboard experience, Hufriya Bhivandiwalla, Air India cabin crew, shares six essential tips to help passengers enjoy a smoother and more comfortable long-haul journey. From simple pre-flight choices to in-flight habits that make a real difference, these practical insights are designed to help travellers stay at ease and arrive at their destination feeling rested and refreshed even during peak travel periods.
1. Hydration is everything
Just as hydration is non-negotiable in any skincare routine or healthy diet, drinking ample water is crucial on a long-haul flight. Aircraft cabins are extremely dry, and dehydration is one of the main reasons passengers feel drained at the end of their journey. Aim to drink at least one and a half litres of water during your flight.
2. Beat jet lag like a pro
If you want to prevent jet lag from spoiling your trip, preparation starts before you board. Begin adapting your body clock to your destination’s time zone a few days before travel. Try aligning your meals and sleep schedule accordingly, and set your watch to the local time of your destination. This simple adjustment can significantly minimise jet lag once you land.
3. Sleep well
Getting restful sleep on a flight can be challenging. Cabin lights, noise, and fluctuating temperatures may make it hard to switch off. Simple choices such as selecting a seat away from high-traffic areas like the galley and lavatories can make a big difference. For added comfort, bring a neck pillow for support, and use noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs along with an eye mask to block out distractions.
4. Stay comfortable and active
Long hours of sitting can make you feel stiff and uncomfortable. Take a few minutes at regular intervals to stretch your back and move your neck, shoulders, waist, and limbs. When the seat-belt sign is off, take a quick stroll down the aisle every couple of hours.
For maximum comfort, opt for loose-fitting clothes and comfortable shoes, which promote healthy blood flow.
5. Skincare is essential
Aircraft cabins can be harsh on your skin. Avoid heavy makeup and let your skin breathe. Apply a light moisturiser to your hands, feet, and face to combat dryness. Since UV rays are stronger at high altitudes, sunscreen becomes essential during daytime flights—remember to reapply regularly to minimise sun exposure.
6. Unwind and relax
Use the flight as an opportunity to unwind. Sip a warm beverage and listen to relaxing or meditative music. You can also explore Air India’s in-flight entertainment library, which offers curated content including international movies in 17 languages, an extensive music library, and exclusive children-focused content on Wobble.
