“Diabetes affects each person differently,” said Alana Day, nurse practitioner at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Texarkana. “Even with strong commitment, managing blood sugar can be difficult. That’s why individualized care, compassion, and education are essential.”
According to a news release, nearly 16% of Americans are currently living with diabetes, and about one in four don’t know they have it. The American Diabetes Association estimates the total annual cost of diabetes in the U.S. exceeds $412 billion, including medical expenses and lost productivity.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95% of all diagnosed cases. It occurs when the body doesn’t use insulin properly or doesn’t produce enough of it.
CHRISTUS Health recommends several steps for prevention and management:
-
Get screened early: Adults over 35 should be screened every three years, especially those with risk factors such as obesity or family history.
-
Eat balanced meals: Focus on whole grains, lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats.
-
Stay active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week.
-
Monitor your numbers: Regular blood sugar checks can help detect changes early.
-
Seek support: Connect with a diabetes educator or support group for guidance and accountability.
