Alex Bowman, driver for Hendrick Motorsports, is emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness following a challenging 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season in which he went winless and struggled to keep pace with teammates Chase Elliott, William Byron, and champion Kyle Larson. Experiencing one of his most difficult seasons yet, Bowman is sharing his journey to highlight mental health issues and advocate for resilience within the sporting community.

Bowman’s Challenging Year Sets the Stage for Advocacy

During the 2025 season, Alex Bowman endured significant pressure due to a lack of victories and only six top-five finishes, while his teammates consistently landed dominant wins. Despite the adversity, Bowman credits not only his perseverance but also the unwavering support of his Hendrick Motorsports team for helping him push through the difficulties.

Inspired by these experiences, Bowman has recommitted his time and resources to the Ad Council’s ‘Love, Your Mind’ campaign, working alongside notable figures like USMNT soccer player Diego Luna and MLB icon Francisco Lindor. The initiative intends to destigmatize mental health discussions, aiming to reach a broad audience including athletes and everyday individuals.

“Coming on board with the Ad Council’s ‘Love, Your Mind’ campaign, to me, was easy, because awareness is something that matters to me a lot.” — Alex Bowman, said via Forbs.

Mental Health: A Personal and Universal Challenge

The focus of ‘Love, Your Mind’ resonates deeply with Bowman, who recognizes the universal nature of mental health struggles. Drawing from his personal battles with anxiety, he stresses that these challenges are not unique to high-performing athletes but affect everyone, regardless of background or profession.

“I think mental health awareness is super important for anyone across the board. Doesn’t matter if you are a competitive athlete or a regular person… anxiety is something I’ve battled with.” — Alex Bowman asserted.

Bowman emphasizes that openly discussing and addressing mental health is vital. Individuals, whether part of the NASCAR world like Kyle Larson and William Byron or from different walks of life, face varied obstacles. Building a supportive environment and prioritizing self-care are crucial steps in confronting these issues.

“Awareness is something that matters to me a lot. Mental health is something that’s different for everybody. We all struggle with something, but who you surround yourself with plus how you take care of yourself means a lot.” — Alex Bowman added.

The Demands of Racing and the Need for Psychological Wellbeing

Bowman has made clear that managing mental health is essential for professional longevity as a NASCAR driver. The rigorous environment, constant high-stakes decision-making, and fast-paced incidents place unique psychological demands on those competing in the Cup Series. Bowman points to proactively addressing both mental and physical health as central to achieving a sustained, successful career.

“From my vantage point, as a driver, how I take care of myself can really determine longevity in the sport. You have to take care of your mind through a lot of that – or it gets bad pretty quick.” — Alex Bowman said.

The stressors of elite-level racing highlight the necessity of mental resilience, especially when even a small mistake can have significant consequences. By maintaining a strong mental state, Bowman asserts, drivers can remain focused during the most crucial moments of competition.

Advocacy’s Potential Impact on and Beyond the Track

Bowman’s commitment, demonstrated through participation in initiatives like ‘Love, Your Mind,’ aims to inspire open dialogue about mental health throughout the sports world and among the wider public. In partnership with figures such as Diego Luna and Francisco Lindor, Bowman is working to break down stigma and encourage support systems for individuals at all levels.

As the NASCAR season progresses, Bowman’s advocacy not only reflects his own journey but may also offer a guide for others facing comparable hurdles. By placing mental wellbeing at the forefront, he underscores the message that seeking support and raising awareness can play a key role in both personal and professional growth for everyone—from seasoned competitors to fans and individuals everywhere.
